Virtual diatom species For the final production I developed over 50 different fully detailed diatoms, each one of them reacting differently to sound input and environmental forces depending on its shape, size and complexity. The complex textures of the silicon shells of the diatoms were created using layers of fractal and procedural shaders, projected using radial or mirror symmetries. This way they are entirely generative and raster free which means that, given sufficient computing power, we could zoom in on them as much as we want without losing detail. |
